Nightbitch, local author Rachel Yoder's debut novel, has been adapted for the screen. The black comedy opens December 6, and personally, I'm stoked. The film follows an artist turned stay-at-home mother, portrayed by Amy Adams, as she undergoes startling changes. Engaging with magical realism and body horror, the plot explores how marriage and motherhood can isolate a woman from her community, her ambition, and her inner self. Can she find a solution for her darkening circumstances? Is her transformation a manifestation of her disappointment with her situation, or a triumph over its limitations? I highly recommend reading or watching to find out.
Adding to the book's appeal is its author, Iowa City-based Rachel Yoder. Yoder is also an assistant professor for Screenwriting Arts at the University of Iowa. There are certain aspects of the setting which Iowa City locals may identify with.
And yes, that glowing review on the cover is from the Carmen Maria Machado, who incidentally is returning to the Iowa Writers' Workshop this spring.
"An unholy marriage of Tillie Olsen and Kafka... Nightbitch is an incredible feat."
-Carmen Maria Machado
Indulge your feral side and give Nightbitch a try, in whichever medium you prefer. I can't wait to read/watch Yoder's next project, and as always, it's a great time to be a reader in Iowa City.
