We are the Dead

Maddie Heath

University of Iowa

Romance, Dystopian

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black

And our every move is watched

To a world of candy cigarettes,

Sugar, coffee, no regrets

Sit back, pretend that everything

Is just a fraction of a second from being okay

Imagine open sky, my love

We’re sun-drenched, chocolate on our tongues

Stay here, my dear, and dream of freedom

Thoughts in time, your own opinion

The twisting silence of the bells

I said “I love you,” just as well

My lipstick smudges on your cheeks,

You read of how things used to be

Lay back, pretend that everything

Is just a fraction of the second from being a dream

A dream of oranges and lemons

Of wine and rouge and pretty dresses

Stay here with me, dear, on the bed,

And whisper in my ear,

“We are the dead.”
