Senior Staff
Some of you may recognize our senior staff from previous issues. Our illustrious Editor in Chief, Tatum, is ready to charge forward with Volume 8 of Wilder Things Magazine this semester and is most excited to develop our blog on the Wilder Things website. The magazine isn’t her only focus this fall. She makes sure to watch Gilmore Girls this season every year. She says she’s on her eighth watch through!
Tatum’s Editor in Chief Assistant is Lauren. She wants to be a
freelance author and this semester she wants to work on creating Wilder Things merchandise. If being an author doesn’t work out, she wouldn’t be opposed to being a supermodel and walking in Milan Fashion Week.
Janessa is our Managing and Production Director Assistant. She had a
rock thrown at her head three separate times by three separate people but is still most excited about making new friends in her major. Despite being a magnet for dangerous flying rocks, she would love to be able to travel to Narnia. She specified the peaceful times so maybe forehead stitches can be avoided.
The Marketing Director (and marketing team leader <3) is Josephine. If she
were in a murder mystery, she would hope to be the detective but realistically she knows she would be the beautiful damsel swooning and the couch and being revived by smelling salts. This role would fit her in a horror movie as well seeing as she begs not to be in one at all.
Braja, our Managing and Production Director, would like to remind everyone to stan Ateez and PLAVE for clear skin. She is very considerate for someone who thinks they would also be the murderer in a horror slasher film. Josephine better watch out. Maybe if she liked Kpop instead of dad rock she would be spared.
Our treasurer is Myah, and she is also our only math major on the team. She wants to create magazine merchandise for members and enthusiasts. Just because she is a math major doesn’t mean she isn’t a fan of speculative fiction. She loves fantasy novels and comedy movies and would travel to Pixie Hollow if she could.
Marketing Team
The marketing team this year is made up Ava, Solenn, Kennedy, and their team leader Josephine, who is introduced in the Senior Staff section. Be prepared to hear from the entire team on the blog in the next few months, especially Ava who is excited to make her opinions known. Her first opinion she would like to share is her belief that she would be the final girl in a horror slasher film. She is an avid listener of Chappell Roan so I’m betting she wouldn’t mind being a "Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl" as well. The love of pop music is strong in the Marketing team.
Kennedy has spent her summer listening to Chappell Roan and not so patiently waiting for the release of Short n’ Sweet. She firmly believes "Espresso" is the song of the summer but her favorite on the album is "Taste" because she has good taste in reading choices just like Solenn. Her favorite genre of speculative fiction is fantasy and one of her favorite books in the genre is Legendborn which is the fictional world Solenn would travel into if she could. Is it because of the love interest? Maybe. But it’s also because of the round table. Who wouldn’t want to be a knight!
Web/Design Team
Shea, Whitney, and Lily make up our wonderful web design team. First up, Lily, is one of the only two non-English/Creative Writing majors on the staff but that doesn’t hinder her enjoyment of the magical realism genre. She loves the works of Isabel Allende and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude is being made into a series so keep an eye out! If magical realism was real Lily may be able to attain her dream job of being Marie Antoinette’s landscape architect but alas, she would need to travel through time.
Next up for the web editors is Whitney, who dreams of being a crazy rich and successful author who lives in a giant lakehouse. In addition to being a novelist, she wants to go into publishing after graduation. Her favorite genre is dystopian but hopefully she has a chance to graduate before the cordyceps fungus turns us all into zombies.
The typesetter and cover designer for Volume 8 is Shea. Oel ngati kameie, Shea! She wants to be a Na’vi from the Avatar franchise but would prefer a magical world without conflict. As a murder mystery character, she would be the diva who wears a bright purple feather coat (fake feathers out of respect for Eywa).
Writing Workshop Editors
Volume 8 of Wilder Things Magazine will have Taylor, Janani, Iliana, and Eleanor as the workshop editors. Professional concertgoer hopeful Eleanor thinks she would survive a horror movie only to be killed off in the sequel. Her rom-com desires sound much more optimistic. She thinks she would be like Kat from Ten Things I Hate About You, and honestly, who wouldn’t want that, Kat is an icon.
Iliana is our next editor, a double major in English/Creative Writing and Dance. It’s not surprising that her unattainable dream job is to be a Rockette. If she could travel to any fictional world, it would be the wizarding world from Harry Potter.
Bend the knee to the Workshop editors’ team leader Taylor, of House Wilder Things, rightful Queen of Volume 8, Protector of the Literary Magazine. Taylor loves all things fantasy, specifically Game of Thrones, BBC’s Merlin, and Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. She would love to take a vacation in the world of Merlin to get a chance to watch the stars. Besides fantasy, she likes science fiction and binges the first season of Danny Phantom when class stresses her
out.
The last of our writing workshop editors is Janani, who loves science fiction and horror. In her free time, she enjoys roleplaying games and trying restaurants across Iowa City.
Writing Copy Editors
The copy editors for these next issues are Autumn, Maddie, Charice, and Dani. Watch out for Autumn, her fantasy pet of choice is a dragon. It is no surprise that Autumn is a lover of speculative fiction stemming from her love of the fantasy genre. She is excited to spread her enjoyment to others through the Wilder Things issues she works on.
Any readers of the popular romantasy series, Fourth Wing, should prepare some conflict between Autumn the Dragon Rider and Dani the Griffen Flyer. Their motivation to join the Wilder Things team should keep them in check. Dani is excited to publish this school year’s issues and wants to work towards her goal of working at one of the Big 5 publishing houses!
Maddie is excited to work with our team to create a beautiful, polished publication for Volume 8. She is fighting for the position of biggest Swiftie on the team (I will not let her win) and Taylor is the person she wants to meet most in the world.
Our final copy editor is Charice. She originally came to the University of Iowa for the pharmacy program but stayed for the writing program. If she were a character in a romcom it would be the funny best friend who ends up with a romantic subplot that is better than the main one.
We couldn't be more excited about this year's team! Browse their bios at your leisure here.
