Writing Prompts for a Rainy* Day *Rain Not Required

Updated: May 27

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any writer must be in want of writing prompts.

Never fear!! Wilder Things is here to help. Scroll to find six prompts of varying themes and genres. Some are designed to work with WIPs, others are meant to applied to a blank page.

PROMPT 1: Genre-Blending Meeting

Choose two genres (the more niche and different they are, the better). Come up with two characters, one for each of the genre. What happens when they meet?

PROMPT 2: Time Travel

Think of your favorite modern story, show, or movie. It can be any genre, but preferably set during the present-day. How would it change if it was set in the past? What about the future? Bonus points if you change the setting, too!

PROMPT 3: It's All a Game

Think of your current WIP. What would it be like if it was written as an instruction manual for a tabletop game? What would it be like if it was written as a game?

PROMPT 4: Rhythm and Form

If you're working on a poem, save a current draft and get prepared to get messy. Try writing the poem in a different form (bonus points if you try forms of varying lengths!). Don't forget to switch up the rhythm, too.

PROMPT 5: A Bard's Muse

A traveling bard has just come across your WIP. How would they sing it to a band of merchants? What about to a rowdy tavern? Bonus points if you think up a tune to go with the song. Bonus bonus points if you perform it!

PROMPT 6: When All Else Fails...

Grab a nearby book, magazine, or object with words written on it in some way. Choose either a word, a sentence, or a paragraph. Use it as the opening to your next piece. You can also use it as the last line, if that's to your fancy.

Did you try any of these prompts? Let us know in the comments! Maybe we'll see the final products during our next submission period...we sure hope so! 👀

Until next time, xoxo,

Tydia (Tatum + Lydia) 💖
